The first female justice in the court was Fathima Beevi appointed on 6 October 1989. There have been 11 female justices in the court since then. Presently there is 3 sitting female judges out of the total 34 judges (including Chief Justice of India) in the court.

This is a list of female judges of the Supreme Court of India, the highest court in the Republic of India. The list is ordered according to chronology.

Education and Career as an Advocate

Justice Hima Kohli went to school in Delhi. She studied history until post-graduation at Delhi University. She then took up law at the Campus Law Centre. In 1984, she enrolled as an advocate at the Bar Council of Delhi and practiced at the Courts there. In 1999, she was appointed as Standing Counsel for the New Delhi Municipal Council at the Delhi High Court. She held this position until she was appointed as Additional Standing Counsel Civil for the Government of NCT Delhi in 2004. She was also the Legal Advisor to various government and private corporations.

Career as a Judge

In 2006, she was elevated to the Delhi High Court as an Additional Judge. The following year, she was confirmed as a permanent Judge on August 29th, 2008. During her tenure as a Delhi High Court judge, she was a part of various committees including legal aid, decongestion of jails, mediation and the Delhi Judicial Academy. In 2021, she was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court. She was the first woman Chief Justice of this Court. She was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2021.

Career as an Advocate

Justice Bangalore Venkataramiah Nagarathna enrolled as an advocate on October 28th 1987. She practised at various courts in Bangalore, Karnataka. While she was practising as a lawyer, she took up cases in constitutional law, commercial and insurance law, service law, administrative and public law, land and rent laws, family law, arbitration and conciliation. She is the daughter of former Chief Justice of India, ES Venkataramiah

Career as a Judge

Thirty years into her career, Nagarathna J was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court in 2008. Two years later, she was confirmed as a permanent Judge in 2010. Nagarathna J occupied this position for 11 years. She was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2021. She is projected to become the 54th Chief Justice of India on September 25th, 2027. She will occupy this position for 36 days.
