NITIE, Mumbai to Become an IIM: A New Chapter in Excellence

  Introduction

The National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) in Mumbai, India, is on the cusp of a transformational journey. The Institute has received approval to be converted into an Indian Institute of Management (IIM), signifying a momentous step in its pursuit of academic excellence.

The Union Cabinet approved a bill for an amendment to the IIM Act for this transformation. The amendment will result in NITIE Mumbai being upgraded as IIM Mumbai. This announcement is a part of series of bills approved by the cabinet ahead of the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, scheduled from 20 July to 11 August, 2023.

  A Brief History of IIMs

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are a group of premier autonomous business schools in India. The concept of IIMs was initiated in the 1950s by India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who envisioned the need for institutions that could provide world-class management education to meet the country's economic and industrial challenges.

The first IIM, IIM Calcutta, was established in collaboration with the Government of West Bengal and the Alfred P. Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, in 1961. The success of IIM Calcutta laid the foundation for the establishment of other IIMs in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Lucknow in the subsequent years. These institutions rapidly gained prominence for their academic excellence, rigorous curriculum, and outstanding faculty.

Currently, there are 20 IIMs across the country, and the elevation of NITIE, Mumbai to IIM status will mark the establishment of the 21st IIM.

  A Brief History of NITIE

Initially, NITIE was known as the National Institute for Training in Industrial Engineering (NITIE).
