 A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

The Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law is the first of its kind law school established in the IIT system. It was set up in 2006. It was set up in collaboration with the George Washington University Law School, Washington DC, US and is the brainchild of Mr. Vinod Gupta.  The school aims to cater to the need for lawyers with technical expertise. It is the only Law School with a technology focus.

LOCATION & FACILITIES AT IIT-KHARAGPUR

RGSOIPL is situated well within the lush campus of IIT-Kharagpur. It is situated about 120 km west of Kolkata and is well connected to Kolkata by Road and Rail transport.

Kharagpur can be reached in about 2 hours by train or 3 hours by car from Howrah railway station of Kolkata. The Institute is about 5 km from the Kharagpur railway station. The nearest airport to Kharagpur is the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU), Kolkata.

COURSES OFFERED

The School offers a three year LL.B program with specialization in Intellectual Property Law recognized by the Bar Council of India. The maximum student intake is 50.

It offers LL.M program in various disciplines of law and a doctoral program.

 

ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION TO LLB (Hons.)

  • First Class Bachelor Degree in Engineering / Technology / Medicine or equivalent. OR
  • First Class Master Degree in Science or Pharmacy or equivalent. OR
  • First Class MBA Degree with any of the above.

The admission to the RGSOIPL happens through a written entrance test and the details of the same have been shared below. It is followed by a Personal Interview.

CAMPUS PLACEMENTS AND INTERNSHIPS

There is a compulsory summer internship for 8 weeks after 4th semester. Every year the campus placements start from 1 December every year. Some of the recruiters at RGSOIPL are General Electric, Eaton Corporation, Siemens India, Honeywell, Battelle India, Robert Bosch GmbH and Novo Nordisk primarily for IP positions. Among Indian firms, Indian Oil Corporation, Hero Motocorp, Bajaj Auto, TVS Motors, Infosys, Wipro, Tata Consultancy Services, Cognizant, Johnson & Johnson, Venus Remedies and Avesthagen come for recruitment. Some of the Tier-I law firms  that offer campus placements are Amarchand & Mangaldas, Anand and Anand, Lall Lahiri & Salhotra, Lakshmi Kumaran & Sridharan, IUS Juris, Remfry and Sagar, Nishith Desai Associates.

The average package offered to the students is 4-7 lakhs and the highest package offered is 8-14 lakhs.

 

FEES OF LLB

The total fee for each semester is approximately Rs.75000 and the LLB course is of six semesters. So, the total cost comes around 4.5 Lakhs.  The fees structure is revised periodically.

 

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The School has a Cultural club, a Wall Journal committee, a Moot Court Society (MCS) and a Training & Placement Cell (TnP). The School also has a Legal Aid and Intellectual Property Facilitation Cell which offers free consultation over legal and IP matters to the general public, students and IIT community.

According to National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF), the National Law University is on the fourth position with a score of 69.81. The NIRF is a ranking adopted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, to rank institutions of higher education in India. The Rankings are based on “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception”.
