How is the life in a Top Law School in India?

Finally, after crossing all the hurdles of boards, entrance and counseling, you successfully land into your ‘destined’ law school. We have precisely used the term ‘destined’ over here because there are times when you don’t want to join a particular college but have no other options apart from it, and my dear friends life is all about unexpected things. So, below we have described certain things that are unique to a law school:

  1. CASES: Teaching in law school revolves around ‘cases’. Most of the teachers quote direct reference from different Supreme court, high court and district court cases. Initially, this is difficult for the students to adapt to this methodology. However with the passage of time, they start adapting to it. A well-stocked library comes to the rescue of the students as most of them prefer to read books in their free time to develop their understanding of the subject.
  2. MOOT COURTS: These are mock courts where students argue imaginary cases for practice. But this is one of the most fun-filled and loved exercise. Lawyers wait for it eagerly. There are inter-college national and international level moot competitions that take place during the course. This is one of the classic example of learning by doing. The simulated environment provides the students a feeler of the courts and they continue to hone their skills.
  3. PARLIAMENTARY DEBATING: This is the second most loved exercise at the law schools. They are often referred to as ‘PDs’ by the students. There are two parts to a Parliamentary debate – The Speakers, and the Adjudicators, both of whom are marked by the other. While this may seem strange at first, it’s only a matter of a few debates before one grabs the nuances of debating.

Both Moot courts and PDs help the students to develop their analytical and oratory skills. They understand the nuances and details of building an argument and putting them across in a right manner. Life of a budding lawyer revolves around Acts, Debates, Cases, Internships and placements, Moots, Research Papers, and Sports Fests. You will have to burn the midnight oil but at the same time you will equally enjoy the fests and inter college competitions.

Life in a law school can be truly described as the metamorphosis of a student from being an aspiring lawyer to an actual one.
